Miami International Airport never lost power, so I don't know why they shot it as such... but this is just a glimpse of what most intersections looked like.
With 4.5 million people in the dark, we're still kickin. Infact, our generator didn't even flinch. Streets are hectic, traffic lights out everywhere, total gridlock. Everyone is either sitting in the dark, standing outside, stuck in traffic, stuck in an elevator; or if they got lucky, didn't lose power at all.
The entire lower portion of the state seized up when a major power surge hit around 12:45pm. The domino effect stretched from Jacksonville to the Florida Keys hitting 13 counties, that's the entire eastern coast of the state. Up the ante with simultaneous tornado watches up in various counties and storms rolling in off the Atlantic. FPL reports 8 power plants shutting down, plus two nuclear reactors. Crazy few hours out here. Fighter jets, news helicopters, emergency vehicles everywhere.
Kind of feels like hurricane season already.
Check some of the early imagery here.
