As the title suggests, this is an interesting article on the evolution of the DJ. By and large I think Gotty raises some interesting points, but also focuses solely on the role of the DJ as a purveyor of new music. I think he clearly states those conditions from the jump, but it's deserving of mention that being a true DJ, in my opinion, encompasses far more. In many cases, DJs have become bloggers (raises hand) and conversely, not all bloggers can be true DJs.
Excerpt:
So do you still check for the DJ? Do you run to the barbershop or the swap meet to cop the latest mixtapes in hopes of hearing the next big thing in good music? Or are you the one now going into the barbershop selling burned cds and tellin’ them what to listen for?
Let’s face it: For new shit, you’re more likely to go to eskay than Kay Slay.
That being said; that statement stands as truth on face-value, but there's definitely more to it because being a true DJ is more than just dropping that new _____. I have far too much respect for the craft to hinge the whole thing one aspect of a bigger picture.
Check the article comments on TSS for a deeper exchange regarding my point.
