It's been a long time since I've heard something this cold, dark and sinister. The genre doesn't even go there these days, so to hear a group like 3:33 (or anyone for that matter) bring this cinematic sound and approach back to the forefront is not only refreshing -- but strangely fulfilling.

Deleted catalog from the multi-faceted DJ Vadim (of One Self fame). Giles Petersen was one of the first, if not the first to break this debut on BBC Radio 1 in '95. Great record that represents a stripped down, sparse, jazzed-out, sample-heavy head nod vibe that goes well with a nice Malbec. Chillin'.

I have many favorites, but this record or style more specifically, is musically on some next shit -- even 13 years later.

Portishead Essential Mix 1995

Today's gem comes courtesy of Portishead's DJ, Andy Smith. This was an Essential Mix Session that originally aired on April 23, 1995. The programming is phenomenal and the mix is flawless. Listening to this takes me back to the two-night Portishead show at the Cameo theater in South Beach almost 10 years ago. Two hours of old school hip hop routines, leading in to Portishead live.
