Leviathan - Leviathan / Xasthur split

So got the computer up and running, downloaded a good chunk of my music back and look for any updates to my favorite bands, and lookie here, Wrest is ready (and practically finished) with a new Leviathan album! So I figured I would post my personal favorite by him. Now I'm not too big on the drums of Xasthur, but this particular album is just a great moving piece, at least by Leviathan. Buy it! (vinyl ftw)

Vreid Discography

Vreid is a black metal band from Sogndal, Norway. After the tragic death of Valfar in January 2004, the rest of the Windir members decided to end Windir, and put their energy into other projects. Hváll formed a new band, called Vreid. Vreid is a Norwegian word for wrath. Vreid consists of the 3 Windir members Hváll (bass), Steingrim (drums), Sture (vocals/guitar) and a new guitarist named Ese. Ese has been a close friend of the Vreid members for years, and he was co-engineer on Windir’s Likferd album.

Diamond Eyed Princess - Korlguelaal

Wanted to post something a bit more upbeat than the last one, or maybe a bit more popular :P French black medieval metal. Last album they put out was in 2001, a nine year gap between that one and this one. Highly conceptual, almost like a soundtrack to a play, yet the music is the most important part. Cant really point to too many bands like this, but im sure there are plenty of underground bands wishing they could play half as good and be as innovative as these guys.

Lyrinx - Nihilistic Purity

Another great melancholic album, from 2007. Lyrinx are from the UK, and were signed on to the Avantgarde Music label last year, but according to a friend of the band their debut is on hold due to 'personal issues'. I can't imagine how great an album they could produce with studio backing, but these guys really are great at setting up a gloomy mood. Has recorded splits with more well known bands such as Elysian Blaze and Austere. And not every song sounds the same! Quality is sub-par, but I did have to record off cassette.

Shining - VII Fodd Forlorare

Sorry for the lengthy absence, life gets in the way :P Luckily I've had no death threats etc but then again i would probably need to be found to recieve any XD Anyways, i meant to put this up way back but never got around to it. Newest from Shining, great album, still not as strong an album as my favorite Halmstad, but still worth a listen to.

Mammal

We ain't posted this yet have we?! I can't remember.

Altar of Plagues are basically an Black Metal band from Ireland who seem to do a good job of raising notches, they make black metal how it should be. Atmosphering and Soul Purging, this is the best extreme metal album of 2011 for me, and you may very well agree!

Twilight

Twilight is a super group of (mainly black) metal musicians. Line-up includes Blake Judd, N. Imperial, Wrest, Aaron Turner, Stavros Giannopolous, and Sanford Parker. Who cares about names though? The music is phenomenal and even if such heavyweights weren't in the picture, this album definitely can make a name for itself. You don't get bored waiting for some random atmospheric piece taking too long. Your not wincing at the vocal selection. This is great american black metal brought to you by Southern Lord! Just have the newest release on electronic media.

Leviathan

Leviathan is a one man project of Jeff Whitehead also known as Wrest, who hails from California. Combining traditional elements of black metal along with DSBM, this band can have you headbanging to some of the gloomiest sounds around. There is a happy medium in terms of production, so even the more discerning listener may appreciate this blackened mix. Wrest is traditionally a drummer, but tat doesn't mean that the atmospheric section, or the other instruments suffer at his specialization. In fact, that means that there are no PROGRAMMED DRUMS! Currently Wrest is in prison for alleged sexual assault putting Twilight, Lurker of Chalice and Leviathan projects on hold. EDIT: bailed out. Just the first two releases, I lost the second two last year :(

Nortt

"Nortt was formed in the autumn of 1995. In alliance with death and darkness, a journey on the left-hand path had begun. Two years passed by, creating a concept of nihilistic and misanthropic philosophy, preached through black funeral doom metal. The elegies of Nortt tell about death and darkness viewed from the dying and from the dead. They reveal an alluring tale of death. The grave is praised as the godforsaken heaven where eternal darkness prevails. The subtle message: Follow the pale horse! At a funereal pace and with a sombre tone, Nortt summons the forces of the night." - Nortt.dk

Great stuff, drags you through hell and back, more oppressive than Sunn IMO

Shining

Today I present to you the remastered edition of Shining's first album I - Within Deep Dark Chambers. Alot of history and drama in this band. Starting off they played a DSBM style (demos and early releases) but evolving into a more black n' roll feel with a bit of melancholy. At one point, the vocalist staged his own suicide, left a number to call for replacement vox and came as himself reborn through death. Lol, anything to be kvlt I guess A new album is due out in a month, and I am eagerly awaiting that release.

Silencer

This album is definitely gonna have some haters. Yes it is even MORE dsbm, a genre overcrowded to say the least. Silencer will hook you with mesmerizing and melancholic passages and then make your ears bleed with the vocal stylings of Natteramn, which reminds me alot of Golum from LotR for whatever reason. They create a great doomy atmosphere, but still keep the black metal flag high. And the discordance between the melodic guitars and the shrieks and wails really make this album come together nicely. The band broke up a while back because the vocalist was institutionalized. Why? Probably the vocals XD

Really try to give this CD a listen all the way through, its amazing and comes together well in the end.

Walknut

Walknut is an atmospheric black metal band hailing from Moscow, Russia. The only thing i could possibly complain about for this album are the programmed drums. But that's just a tool used to create more atmosphere. For fans of Burzum and the like. This is the only release that I can find anywhere so far.

Cobalt

From the United States is Cobalt with their third full-length album. A great example of US Black metal that tries to do so much at once. Its a very Progressive kind of black metal that manages to stay raw at the same time.I could see this being a metal CD that everyone should at least give a try to hear.

Lifelover

Now here is a band I've been loving for a while now. Lifelover is a band somewhere between DSBM and pop-metal. At first I couldn't click into the band, but now I can't get enough. I can't understand swedish at all, but the emotion conveyed through the vocalists voices paint a picture of bleak hope and misery. Again, melancholy creates a breeding ground for extreme metal \m/

Rudra

Rudra isn't a name that you hear gracing the charts of any top 10 or being nominated for band of the year, or even touring near you. Not until 2005 did they even become known much outside their nation of Singapore. Black metal, Thrash, Death, many elements come together to make this crying goddess howl. Its great extreme metal and their discography is worthy of any metal head into such things. Today's album is from 2009, although they have released a newer album, Brahmavidya: Immortal I, but I'm having a bit of trouble getting ahold of it.
