Last Saturday I was lucky enough to be in the presence of many like-minded people getting down to classic hip hop beats and real funk 45's in the centre of Norwich courtesy of Sure Shot Productions.
And (as you would expect, being the namesake of one of my aliases!) Sure Shot Productions can certainly put on a night.
Consisting of top local dj Just-1 (who has a regular show on Future FM radio) and the legendary Chrome (-ex of Def Tex, the UK's longest-serving hip hop group) who just happens to be one of the country's greatest MC's to ever bless the mic.

All through the night brief shouts were given by Ill Inspired, rocking the echo chamber, who inevitably got on the mic near the end of the session to trade some freestyle rhymes with Chrome. Dyno slipped on Good Times and the crowd got hype as the lads went for it in a 1970's Bronx park jam stylee.
I met up with a load of good people including fam from the Disco Scratch / ABU! / Heroes crew. Big shout to some of the heads in attendance; Scenes, Bit, Jim Cee, Inch, Chrome, Ill Bill, Wizla, Crazel.
Jim & Matt - I don't think I've met a funnier pair of comedy siblings since the brothers, Chuckle. Top banter
Special thanks to Scenes & Inchy who must've clocked up 600 miles between them to make the event as well. As Roy C would say, 'dedication!'
Next month sees the stylings of Def Tex dj, Sure D(elight) on the 1's and 2's. Saturday June 18th.
There's more to Norfolk than Alan Partridge and tractors. Honest!

He sent me a mix - The Graduation Mix -which I have listened to and can give the official ABU! thumbs-up to.
Featuring many classic joints and forgotten tracks such as Positively Black's Think Like Your Enemy, Black Rock & Ron's I'm Tired Of All This, Earl The Poet's High Noon and the very nice UK cut, Rough Potential by EMF.
Gonorstein - Graduation Special Mix by gonner73
There's a wealth of other good reading, old record finds, break-to-the-beats, Gonorstein's own mixes as well as unearthed electro gems. And all of it is tinged with a British slant of the old hip scene along with a great sense of humour. Recommended.
I spent a good while going through and maybe you should too.

I am the proud owner of a brand-new MC Duke tee courtesy of the main man, Lovegrove at Style Warrior.
By using my love of toilet humour, I won first prize on his recent competition to bag me this box-fresh piece of clothing.
Professionally printed on a Fruit Of The Loom grey, Super Premium heavyweight shirt and the fit is perfect. I'm rocking an XL because that how we do at ABU! Towers, yo.

There are a few places you can find the old UK b-boys hanging out these days. If not here then over at Waxer's Disco Scratch or Websta's Heroes website. There's some really interesting people about and some are still working hard pushing forwards with the UK ethic.
I've dug out the old original logo and dusted it off to bring your attention to one of these people in particular, Lovegrove, and his Style Warrior site.
A few years back he originally produced some Hijack t-shirts and then moved on to Overlord X, Son of Noise, Gunshot and MC Mell'O'. Being an ex-writer means that he has that graphic edge just right for design work.
He is now in the process of putting together a Music Of Life shirt and has the blessing of Simon Harris, too. More news on this when I have it.
In the meantime you can still just about get hold of one of the few remaining copies of his Limited Edition 'Heroes' print. This comes in A2 in size, printed in 3 spot colours using a litho press on a heavyweight art stock paper. Look closely at the picture and see how many legendary British acts you can see.

B-Boy Classics

Set up by my man Jaz Ford, an ex radio dj and outta Wellington, New Zealand this is certainly a FB group actually worth checking (as opposed to all hundreds of plain idiotic ones such as "Sucking a cup to your face and then panicking cos it won't come of"*).
The sheer amount of photos on there (619 at this present time) is a delight for the hip hop heads. From record covers to fan photos of artists, there's a lot of good stuff on there.
As well as this, Jaz runs the coldrockdaspot blog, too with some well-written and detailed articles. Again well worth checking out.
This man knows his stuff and as such I'm tentatively considering christening him the NZ version of Waxer. It's all good in the hood.
*This IS a real FB group.

The Bottomless Crates Show is broadcast from the NE1 area of Newcastle, UK and features new and old hip hop, funky breaks and other good stuff.
Once you can get into their accents, being that they're Newky Brown drinkers an' all you'll have a blast! ;-)
You can catch the show live in you're in the city on NE1 FM on a Monday night between 10 and 12. Otherwise you can get the show from the blog usually the next few days after in 2 parts.

These podcasts are well worth spending some time listening to. Your host is "TG-The Analog Master of Disaster" who you may have met over on oldschoolhiphop.com which is where I know him from.
Have a look at the archives for shows with Mr Magic, Melle Mel, Jazzy Jay, MC Chill and others.
The first one I went for was a special on Beat Street and Breakin' with special guest co-host, Fast Break (who appeared in Beat Street).

Also TG has made a video for Bon Rock's "B-Boy" song from 26 years ago. A strange choice, but Mr Rock seems happy enough to appear. The little b-boy - Little Vicious - is pretty fantastic as well.

Waxer's Disco Scratch Forum & Blog

Waxer has been ducking and diving around the UK hip hop scene for a number of years now. Predominantly mooching in the south of England, Steve fell in love, like many a British ageing b-boy, with the sound of Electro which introduced him into the whole scene. With Planet Rock and Adventures on the Wheels Of Steel banging his eardrums he soon progressed to the art of dj-ing and vinyl collecting (mmmm, the smell of new vinyl and the oh, so gleaming protective wrapping. You want me to peel you off? You like it don't you? But slowly, yes, so slowly. Let's not get it all over and finished, let's savour the moment. I'll just make a slight opening and let my fingernail just glide into your slit and feel the corners....sorry I don't know where I'm going with this.)
The hallowed Electro series from Morgan Khan's Streetsounds was soon in his collection and he began hitting the lino. And soon he was also hitting the lines writing KRIM with his cousin, TAME. Following this, Waxer bought the legendary Gemini MX-2200 mixer (as used by Cash Money - I've still got mine somewhere!) from the equally legendary 4 Star General when it was still downstairs in a shop in Carnaby Street (General George, anyone? Who rocked Troop?!).
He was also a follower of the great Mike Allen and religiously listened to his shows each weekend catching the freshest jams of the mid-80's on London's Capital Radio, recording them on the same ten cassettes over and over again. Hindsight's a bitch, ain't it?
As the 1990's approached, Waxer was moving on and dj-ing for small events with modest audiences (ten people? I think we've all been there at some point!) and accumulating his posse and rolling deep under the new moniker of DJ Radiate whilst spookily looking like Marshall Mathers. From here he went stella and rubbed shoulders with some real hip hop talent............
But I digress, you can read the whole story in full here. It's certainly a stonking read and I await to see the obvious film adaptation ("Waxer - A Life In Vinyl") with Eminem in the title role.
The amount of similarities between Waxer's and my early hip hop life are so close that we could be cousins. Ironically enough as I'm now living in Norfolk, 'cousins' is not a term I'd like to shout about too much in this county.... ("...you fill in the pond with concrete, you plough the family into the field, you blow up the tree, and use the leaves to make a dress for your wife who's also your brother" - Alan Partridge)
Now one of the reasons I'm mentioning Waxer here is because he runs a fantastic blog over at http://discoscratch.co.uk/ and on the forum for this month only there is a chance to grab many old UK classic hip hop singles and albums. Each day will bring about a new slice of wax so you best mosey on over there.
Sign up for the new forum and get chatting because this has the potential to be MASSIVE. I'm urging everyone who reads this blog to check it out because at the moment Waxer feels like he's back in 1990 dj-ing in a pub in Havant. Let's get busy and show your faces!

Rocking The City

I just want to spread the news of a website I've been scouring extensively recently by the name of http://www.rockingthecity.com/ It's a British site full of articles, stories, and rare photos of the London graffiti scene from the mid 80's and beyond.
Anyone with a even a passing interest in graf should have a look. I've been enjoying reading the stories from many of the original UK writers of a time when the scene was in it's infancy. And the photos are possibly the only artifacts you'll see of a long-gone age of creative UK writing energy.
The only downside is that due to the sheer amount of pictures, Rocking The City warn "Don't try looking at these pages without broadband coz it'll take you ages".

D.E.F. Momentum & Old Skool Jointz

I have to give a shout out to two blogs that are worth spending some serious time on.
First up is Def D's D.E.F. Momentum which since I discovered it has enriched my hard drive no end.
What D.E.F. Momentum provides is all the lost and many obscure 12"s in mp3 form that you just don't and can't find any where else on the web. You should appreciate that by their existence, 12" singles are going to be more plentiful than their album counterparts so there are a lot more 12"s than albums to be ripped.
Also if you're a cinematic b-boy, check out the blog where you can find Style Wars, Who's The Man, Krush Groove, Wild Style and many others for your downloading pleasure.
And anyone who can name their blog after one of my favourite electro singles of all time must have good taste, right?
Next up is a blog which has been really busy as of late. Produced by a guy by the name of Warlord, Old Skool Jointz is a blog featuring oodles and oodles of hip hop albums that you just know you wished you should've bought at the time.
