Style Wars The Original Soundtrack - Mk II

Posted by admin on Monday, June 21, 2010

I've rebooted my original version of the Style Wars Soundtrack which I made just over a year ago.
This version includes extra dialogue (as indeed, inspired from a thought by Mr Lovegrove), a remix of the intro piece as well as a brand spanking new cover (courtesy of P. Shop).
Respect to Waxer for reminding me about this, too.

Download freely as this is a must for all ageing b-boys and b-girls.

Hush Hip Hop Tour Flicks

All pictures are the property of J Glover. Please do not reproduce without permission.

Hush Hip Hop Tours are based in New York City and take the form of a busride through the city stopping at famous landmarks along the way with luminaries such as GrandMaster Caz from The Cold Crush Brothers, Kurtis Blow, Rahiem of The Furious Five or even Reggie Reg from The Crash Crew stepping onboard.

One ABU! member, Jim, has had the lucky fortune of going on one of the tours and has very kindly sent in all of these fantastic shots. In his own words this is his description of each picture.

1, 2 & 3 - The Bronx Walk Of Fame

4 - A b-boy demonstrating one of the elements on the hip hop tour.

5 - Grandmaster Caz with his reply to 'Rapper's Delight'. He was left out of a bigger place in history by his then manager who stole his rhymes in a audition for the Sugarhill Gang, so he'd written a slightly scathing attack on the track, describing what happened.

6 - Caz demonstrating the look and attitude.

7 - This was once Harlem World, in Harlem, where people came from all over the 5 Boroughs in the late 70's to check out what was going down in the Bronx.

8 & 9 - It looks very different now, now that most of it has been demolished, but this is the amphitheatre used in Wild Style.  Shame really, but at least some of it remains.

10 - Random photo of a gateway to the Bronx.

11 - Kool Herc DJ'd his first party here in 1973. There were so many people trying to get in that it eventually moved outside and became the first block party.

12 - Two members of the Disco Four who were just walking along the street as we passed them by. The girl that runs the tour gave them each a t-shirt of the tour.

13 - Caz outside the Graffiti Hall Of Fame, East Harlem. It was closed for a while when we got there (June 2008) when these photos were taken.

14 - Caz and his helpful tour guide assistant show us how to get ''..power from a street light, made the place dark'' - I love that track DJ Scott La Rock, Blastmaster KRS. One & D-Nice - 'South Bronx'.

Thanks so much to Jim for this. I don't know know about you but this has made me feel just a bit closer to our heritage and has now fueled my desire to eventually reach the birthplace of hip hop at least before I'm 50 (I'm giving myself plenty of scope here, y'understand!)

Edit: Looking at the shots of the ampitheatre - it seems to have shrunk since 1982! Look at the pictures of the Wild Style jam with all the artists on stage and audience watching and it seemed massive. The awe I felt when LEE climbed over the main arch seems to have dampened a little as I see that it wasn't that high up after all.

RIP Frank Frazetta

Posted by admin on Monday, May 10, 2010

Who he?
Well he was an illustrator who painted fantasy landscapes and science fiction fantasy art who sadly died at 82 today.
The reason I'm mentioning him is simple.
Style Wars?
Kase?
Subway station?
The Beastmaster.... Yes?

The legendary one-armed graffiti writer KASE points at a poster for the film The Beastmaster and alludes to the painting being similar to the work of Vaughn Bode and Frank Frazetta.

Look at that eagle.
Word. l said look at that eye. You know where he got that from, right?
From Vaughn Bode and who?

Frank Frazetta!
The BEASTMASTER. The letters is breakin out.
'The epic adventures of a new kind of hero! That's what we're gonna be. The extraterrestrial brothers, you know what I'm saying? Extra terrest! Knowin we the best.

Yes I know. This post is very tenuous at best.

Oh, and check this picture out. This is Frazetta's "Princess of Mars" original painting from which The Beastmaster ripped-off.

Beat Street....flashback!

Posted by admin on Saturday, May 8, 2010

I watched Beat Street again the other night. But what was different with this viewing was that I watched the whole thing from start to finish instead of just heading to the battle at The Roxy as is the usual routine.
So here we have the film in pictures with some analytical commentary.

This is a nice shot of the action that's about to occur.
The Beat Street crew (or rather, The New York City Breakers) ready for battle.
Look at Lee's get-up; to paraphrase Prince Vince, he's sporting it fresh, Homes.

Look Ramo. A white one!
And so it was. Gleaming, clean & fresh.
Unfortunately the subsequent burner sprayed by Ramo was anything but fresh.

And here it is. I think even in 1984 we were looking at this and thinking, "Was it Bring Your Daughter To Work Day when they shot this scene?".
Considering Martha Cooper, Michael Holman, Tony Silver, Henry Chalfont, Kool Herc, The NYC Breakers, Rock Steady Crew, Afrika Bambaataa and Jazzy Jay were on board then they should have treated the 4th element of hip hop with just as much respect.

And here we go again. What a waste of Krylon.

Here's Jazzy Jay at The Roxy rocking those shades before Kanye was out of Rusks. Probably.
And proof that someone else other than Mastermind mixed on the GLI.

Richard Sisco. There he is.

With lyrics such as "Often imotated but never duplicated" I'm wondering, like you, why he never reached the dizzy heights of fame that so cruelly passed him by.
He shoulda dropped that Wanda Dee like a bad habit. Then maybe it would've been HIM singing about thongs.

Here is 'The System'.
Now this guy deserves his own show. No, not the Michael Jackson-alike but the yuppy keyboard player on the right.
The way he grooves and gets down throughout the whole song? He was born with music in his bones, this dude!

Now I might be wrong but weren't these two in the beginning of that Arena documentary, Beat This! A Hip Hop History...? They were poppin' on the street in Times Square and peering into the electronics shop watching Mel Brookes on one of the tv's.
They're called Fantastic Duo btw. And they are, rather.

This was an influential scene for me when I was growing up.
I had various sound equipment around my room in homage to Double K's bedroom. Oh happy days.

The man, the myth, the legend. DJ Kool Herc live at the Burning Spear.
While it was good to hear Kenny spinning the cool Tommy Boy ish - well, mixed by Jazzy Jay actually - it would have been even cooler to have Herc on the wheels of steel.
But then again, I dread to think what they would've made him play.

What a shot.
I mean, look at them. You're facing off with Rock Steady!!
If this was my POV I'd be uprocking with cacky pants.

The legendary Kuriaki (RIP) and the immortal diss to Powerful Pexter:

Powerful Pexter : You're biters, all your homeboys are biters.
Kuriaki: I ain't never stole no moves from you, your moves ain't worth to be bit. So what's up with that, punk?

This was a great scene in that it tried to convey a sense of authenticity of the hip hop culture.
Like KRS ONE said, "power from the streetlight made the place dark".
We see the guy hooking up the power cable to a streetlight and suddenly the whole room lights up.
US Girls are in the house which is always good. I must admit I had a thing for Lisa Lee. I think it was the haircut.
But check out the turntable. Hmmm, Double K, I don't think Kool Herc would've let you play at the Burning Spear if he'd clocked this. Why and how did the needle get over there?

That's all for now. The next post will feature a 'cut-out-and-keep' guide to the b-boys at The Roxy Battle! So what's up with that, punk?

New York, New York, big city of dreams.....

Posted by admin on Friday, April 16, 2010

The legendary New York City Hall Of Fame can be found at northwestern corner of E. 106th Street and Park Avenue in East Harlem.
Apparently it is not an available place for just any writer to hit. You have to be good. You have to be a legend to get up here.
The outside wall is usually reserved for the Tats Cru Inc with the inside being given to TC5 (The Cool 5) mainly. Other crews can have whats left.
There is an annual jam with many legendary writers congregating and rocking the walls.

COPE2 Graffiti Subway Train

Posted by admin on Sunday, January 3, 2010

You've got to admit that this does look a bit tasty.

It's a scaled-down, fully operational, model subway car which has been completely bombed by legendary NYC writer COPE2.
As you can see this looks just gorgeous with the detail on the side, especially the 'CAP ONE' throw-up!

For a short while you have the chance to own this model courtesy of eBay here.

Waterloo Hall Of Fame

Posted by admin on Sunday, September 6, 2009

I was down in London last weekend to visit the first day of Notting Hill Carnival. I met up with some of the old crew on the train and proceeded to scooch along to some of the sound systems.
In attendance was Mark the old school master, Dynamite Duane, Jazz Jon (Justin), and the legendary Guildford writer, RELIC.
At Waterloo Station REL wanted to show me a new Hall Of Fame which I hadn't heard about as I haven't been in the city for some time now.
About 2 minutes out of the station there is a tunnel running under it which is covered in some superb pieces. I was a bit taken aback as there was a phenomenal amount of art everywhere.

I recommend anyone checking it out as it's really close and easy to get to, especially if you've got a Travelcard.

Below is a short vid I took on the day. Apologies for length but I'll take more footage next time.....

The FUN Gallery Returns

Posted by admin on Wednesday, August 26, 2009

If you know Wild Style then you know Patti Astor. If you know Patti Astor then you know The Fun Gallery.

Briefly, the FUN Gallery was co-founded by Patti and opened in 1981 in the East Village of New York. As well as providing a platform for other New Wave artists it also featured a healthy selection of legendary graffiti writers such as FUTURA 2000, LEE, Fab 5 Freddy, DONDI, Lady Pink and ZEPHYR amongst others.
What the gallery was also notable for was the inclusion of two particular artists, namely Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring.

Any visitor to the gallery might find themselves rubbing shoulders with b-boys and rock stars as it became a melting pot for hip, young New York in the early 1980's.

Sadly it closed down in 1985 due to rising rent and many other galleries all providing more of the same.
However Patti is bringing the FUN Gallery back for a short time, not in NYC but in LA. See the pic above for details.

R.I.P. IZ THE WIZ

Posted by admin on Thursday, June 18, 2009

It is with great sadness that I announce that the legendary IZ THE WIZ has passed on.

A lot of people like me knew of him through first watching Style Wars in the 1980's. He struck me as someone who delved a bit deeper into graffiti scene. Quite literally in Style Wars, when he spoke of his trips far into the subway system; "a city under the city" as he remarked.

I was quite alarmed when I saw him again in the dvd release for Style Wars more recently as he was looking very frail. More shocking was when he commented that he would give up all his past fame for full health as he talked about his many years of breathing in the toxic fumes of the paint.

The following is from http://www.at149st.com/ .

"IZ THE WIZ is without question one of New York City's most prolific writers.

IN aka KILL 3 is credited with the most extensive all-city bomb in NYC during 1975 and 76, but IZ was the longest reigning all-city king in NYC history, taking the title many times throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

IZ was well known for his throw-ups in the mid 1970s on the IND and BMT subway divisions. In the late 1970s he broadened his focus by working on top-to-bottoms, burners and scenery whole cars on the presteigious 2 and 5 lines of the IRT subway division.

During this period he silmultaneously maintained all-city throw-up king status. He painted for a variety of top level crews. He has served as president of The Master Blasters and the Queens division of Prisoners Of Graffiti. He has also painted for The Odd Partners, The Crew, The Three Yard Boys and others too numerous to mention.

IZ appeared in the documentary film Style Wars and portrayed a transit police detective in the film Wild Style.

Aliases: IZZY, CI (CRAZY IZ), IKE 327,

Started: 1972

Primary affiliations: TMB, POG, TOP, 3YB, TC

Local origin: Queens, NY

Main lines: ALL CITY"

After struggling with kidney failure for many years, Iz passed away on the 17 June 2009.

I therefore posthumously dedicate my Style Wars soundtrack to him.

***Style Wars News***

Posted by admin on Friday, May 15, 2009

Word on the street is that esteemed urban culture photographer and author of Subway Art, Henry Chalfant is trawling through unused footage from the classic documentary Style Wars to include on (another) special edition for dvd.
The spin here though is that it is for an upcoming Blu-Ray release.

“Last November (2008) Henry Chalfant and myself (Carl Weston) went out to Los Angeles for a week to go through some 29 hours of unused style wars footage,” Weston stated. “Henry and myself are in the early stages of prepping a HD Blu-Ray release of Style Wars. We wanna make sure all of the best of the unused footage is on that release. I shot all of this footage of the screen of the flatbed editor so the audio/video quality is very low.”

Did I hear right? 29 hours? How much does a Blu-Ray player cost anyway.....

And also, check back here very soon because I've got an Ageing B-Boys Unite! special exclusive Style Wars treat coming up for ya.

Here's a little taster of the Special Edition............

Happy Birthday Patti Astor!

Posted by admin on Tuesday, March 17, 2009

So who came first, Patti Astor or Debbie Harry? Well Debbie Harry actually by about 5 years. But they seem to be one and the same person in my mind as both were all over New York city in the late 70's, early 80's and both had a major influence in the formative years of hip hop.

Here's a great little video about the life of Patti (in 8 minutes!) and you'd be surprised at the unseen archival footage as well as bits and doodads of Fab 5 Freddy, Lee Quinones and Zephyr chatting about the great lady.

Rock, Rock, Electro Rock!

Posted by admin on Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to visit the Hippodrome in London in 1985 to witness Mike Allen and his amazing technicolour Hawaiian shirt while he compered the legendary b-boy event that was Electro Rock.
Featuring some of the best-known UK artists at the time (spot a young Goldie credited under his real name of Clifford Price in The B-Boys crew) as well as a special appearance from the mighty Afrika Bambaataa, there are some great moments in this video.
I used to have this on vhs until someone skanked it, and my BBC doc A Hip Hop History and come to think of it my home-recorded, Westwood doc, Bad Meaning Good.
If you were in the crowd, shout out and let us know where where you are!
Highlights include (but not limited to)....

KC's flying headphones (22.14)
Bloke who used to be on Eastenders (28.10)
Mike's strange attire (5.38)
Junior Gee's mullet (8.01)
Strangely arousing legs akimbo action from Uprock (33.32)
Is it a girl, no it's Sipho (RIP) before they dropped although that doesn't explain the bizarre moves (35.40)
And my favourite, watchthecamera, watchthecamera, watchthecamera, watchthecamera...SHIT! (50.10)

N.b. According to Wikipedia, Mike Allen was born in 1942 which made him 43 years old when he appeared on Electro Rock. He's now 67.......!?
