Combo de la Muerte is an Italian band that plays Voodoo Latin Jazz versions of Heavy Metal classics.
Some songs are so transformed you would never find them if there weren’t for the lyrics. In “Peace Sells” for example there are no lyrics, but the bassline is a trademark and it seems it was tailor made for this style. The sticker on the cover says it’s latin voodoo jazz and we have no reason to disagree. Listen to “Mama I’m Coming Home” with banzo, female vocals and sounds from seabirds. “Tropical Steel” has a brutal side though too. So brutal that “Pull The Plug” and “Collection By Blood” leave you numb as you don’t know what to think about the outcome that highlights the music and not the power of the performance. “You Suffer” is being treated on a really extended version and shows clearly that sheer fun was the motivation for this task. This release stands straight next to Pat Boone’s “In Metal Mood”. It is an excellent attempt of totally changing the arrangement and the production of the songs leaving just their backbone of the composition and the lyrics. But you have been warned, there is no metal in here, just the titles. Besides that, get ready to dance salsa on Slayer and share a slow dance with your beloved on Manowar. (metalinvader)
