Blind Guardian is a German heavy metal band formed in the mid-1980s in Krefeld, West Germany. The band is often credited as one of the seminal and most influential bands in the power metal and speed metal subgenres, Blind Guardian is a part of the German heavy metal scene that emerged in the mid-1980's. The band's lyrics, written by vocalist Hansi Kürsch, are inspired by the fiction of fantasy authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien, Stephen King, and Michael Moorcock, as well as traditional legends and epics. Over the years, a running theme has developed associating the band members with travelling bards.
Beginning a career more focused on speed and thrash, Blind Guardian eventually made the switch into full on power metal. And along with the legendary Helloween, created and formed what would be come to known as 'European Power Metal.'
I love the later years of this group, my first album of theirs being Nightfall In Middle Earth - their most symphonic album to date - and one of my favorite albums. Their early works are more akin with thrash, but you can still hear the power elements that would become evident in their sound throughout the 90's. Again, I go through much more detail in my other site (Part 1, Part 2).
