Professor 9th & The Formula

Posted by admin on Friday, September 21, 2007

KRS is known as the teacher, but now 9th Wonder and Chris "Play" Martin (of Kid'n'Play fame) have earned that title as well.

While it is somewhat old news that 9th was/is teaching a class at North Carolina Central University, in Durham, most of us (or maybe just me) that couldn't attend were actually interested in what was covered. Like I said, y'all can call me a Rap Nerd. It's all good. This video is a part of ThisIsRealMusic.com's running series with 9th called The 9th Degree.

The course, titled Hip Hop In Context, examines the origins of the music with a far more profound approach than most care to get into these days. I hear a lot about the new generation not really caring about where it came from, and that's sad. From the jump-off in '67 with James Brown, to the progression that led the music to where it is today; the lesson plans delves into the deep subterranean foundation of the entire genre, dissecting bits and pieces of some of the most influential works in its three-decade story.

History is something very important to the establishment of the culture, is dually crucial in its vitality, and critical to its longevity. Without getting too much into it, I leave the post-course analysis for you to marinate on.

This is the short 4 minute version, and the link below is the full 20 minute version, which is well worth watching.

9th Wonder & Chris "Play" Martin - Hip Hop In Context

In more 9th news, following the insanely dope 2005 album collabo with Buckshot, The Chemistry, comes the sequel and benefit by product, The Formula. Here's another excerpt courtesy of ThisIsRealMusic.com and 9th Wonder. Peep out No Ha, brother of Dru Ha. Duck Down Records. Interestingly enough, two of the students in the course are on this album, which hits stores in October.

Also look out for KRS' outing on Duck Down, and 9th Wonder's Dream Merchant Volume 2
