This is a Dutch documentary from 1986 featuring a bit of a fashion victim who has somehow managed to snag the best acts in New York to interview Schoolly D, LL Cool J, Russell Simmons and then the last 20 minutes moves up to 1993 and meets Ice T in his L.A. mansion.

80 Blocks From Tiffany

Remember how you always hear about Bam originating from the tough New York gangs to create the the Zulu Nation? Well this hour-long doc features The Savage Skulls and The Savage Nomads, two prominent gangs at the time (this was made in 1979). This is interesting especially if you are a fan of Walter Hill's The Warriors.

Lesson 3.

Rapping - Lowdown.

Shown during kids tv in 1988, this UK documentary featured a variety of different hip hop fans from around Britain; some inner city, some not.
If you've already seen this you know how classic it is (although not always intentionally). If you haven't then you're in for a treat.
Sample line, "One day in Maths I was about to sneeze and what came out was this snare drum sound!"

Track Of The Day # 6 "Reckless"

I got this in my head yesterday and it's been there ever since. So I want to share it with you.
Such a brilliant drum arrangement and before Ice got well in touch with his gangsta side, here is Ice T & David Storrs - "Reckless". Hook up your headphones so you can really appreciate the bassline.

Hijack - The Horns Of Jericho (1991)

Arguably the best British album ever (although some might say that title goes to the London Posse's Gangster Chronicles - not me though, I'm all over the Southside crew like a cheap suit), Hijack upped the game with their long-awaited debut elpee back in '91.

Now this could possibly be due to Ice T's influence, or that they were signed to a major label, nay major American label, or maybe it's because they were just shit-hard. Look at 'em! They've got knives and balaclavas and that. They're saying, 'Buy this album, you spotty, white geek or else we'll come round and kick down your door and use our loud, shouty voices to scare you to death with tales about South London and Brixton hard nuts'.

How about that intro to the album? Gives me shivers each time I hear it. Weird, emotive, manic stuff.

My pick is Hijack The Terrorist Group which is a real rousing ball-cracker of a track which gives me the same feeling I experience when listening to PE's Welcome To The Terrordome.

What happened to them? They came, they conquered, they got dropped from Warners/Syndicate, and then started releasing effing crappy Garage bollox that's what (Do You Really Like It? 2001- chorus refrain "we're lovin' it, lovin' it, lovin' it" - yes, you know it. You do love it, too).

Ice-T - Rhyme Pays (1987)

Remember ICE-T in "Breakin..."? He was the only cool person on that. Obviously it goes without saying that JC gets props (Van-Damme), too.

Unfortunately Reckless never made it to his debut album (or The Coldest Rap, for that matter) but instead we got the brilliant, punctuating synths of 6 N The Morning which is the 2nd track and my personal favourite. This track was inspired by Schoolly D's PSK (which can be found further down this blog) as Ice-T has often been quoted.

West Coast lays it's mark right here. By an OG named Tracy Lauren.
