Ronnie Hudson & The Street People

Posted by admin on Sunday, April 18, 2010

In the very beginning Hip Hop was a mix of soul aesthetics, burgeoning electronic funk and vibrant street energy. In 1982 Funk band Ronnie Hudson & The Street People capitalized on that street energy with a B-Boy tribute over a cover of Roger Troutman's 'So Ruff, So Tuff'.

What's confusing is the hook "California likes to party.." etc was eventually made famous 14 years later by Dr Dre and 2Pac on 'California Love', which was re-sung by Roger, so by that time he was covering a song that covered his original song on somebody else's cover.

For you Coast trippers, enjoy the East and West Coast versions of this classic jam.
